Watched you interview a family; little Grace's family from Sandy Hook. I saw tears run down your face yet you kept your composure. You have her painting of the owl and promised to frame it and cherish it. I have always thought highly of you Anderson but your compassion for these children make me admire you and respect you even more deeply. Thank you for validating these precious lives. Thank you for honoring these innocent little souls. Thank you for just being you in a terrible tragic situation. Thank you for not invading but lovingly telling their stories. You are truly a gift.

In response to SharonM -- there is no simple answer to your question "why do people kill"? The reasons may be many and varied. And most mentally ill persons are not violent.

There is a subset of murderers that have personality disorders, such as antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. When these two personality disorders co-exist for one person, it can be a particularly dangerous combination. Antisocial does not mean, as many believe, asocial. Rather, it refers to persons who break the law, defy authority, do not follow the moral and social dictates that most others follow. Narcissistic personalities want fame and glory. Hence, keeping the offenders nameless is a very wise choice that Anderson and others have made.

The names of the killers are not focused on, because to do so can give other like-minded antisocial/narcissistic personality disordered persons who are violent the idea that they, too, can attain fame and notoriety by engaging in such atrocities.

You raise the question of whether the killer had a terrible trauma himself? Perhaps. But that is no excuse for such a cold and sadistic act. Many people are traumatized or hurt, but do not go on to traumatize or hurt others.

Dear Anderson,

Your program Tuesday evening 12/18/12 at Newtown, CN was very moving. We have been grieving personally for the 26 families of the horrific Sandy Hook school massacre.

We listened carefully as we watched your interview of Grace's mother and father Lynn & Chris McDonnell.

Our country and our government must finally take several corrective measures regarding these increasingly prevalent mass murders.

We are asking you there at CNN to send a DVD of your interview with Lynn & Chris McDonnell to each Congressman in Washington D.C. (all house members and Senators).

Your interview certainly can help to get our Congress to stop jawboning and pass necessary and good legislation in several areas of mental health, gun control (includes military weapons of all types and including and school safety.

Way back in 1977 I took the required Biology class and we had a monkey that lived in a cage but was also allowed to come out during class. He loved our teacher but wasn't crazy about the students. We were allowed to have him out but we were told not to engage with him because he might bite. I know 1977 was a long time ago but I didn't realize it was the dark ages !

Just a suggestion about change that might be considered is to build an entry bldg. on all school buildings for visitors arriving at the school that is locked on both sides of that new bldg. One locked door doesn't seem to be enough and maybe it would just deter anyone from getting in quickly. A pepper spray or something similar could then be set off in that room if needed. Just a thought cause all thoughts or suggestions might be helpful.

I keep hearing the question, "Who needs an assault weapon?" The question I have not heard asked is why was each assault weapon purchased in the first place? That is the only important question, the motivation behind the purchase. Is anyone ever going to ask it? Anderson?

As for the subject of mental illness, the arm of the medical establishment called psychiatry labels everyone who has even been diagnosed with depression as being mentally ill. News anchor, Mike Wallace, would also have been painted with the same "mental illness" brush as Adam Lanza. And yet the ever so "insightful" psychiatric profession can't understand why people are not willing to take on the "mental illness" label and turn themselves in, as it were. It's mind-boggling just how stupid and insensitive psychiatry is.

On the bright side, though, since millions of people have been labelled mentally ill by psychiatry, a profession that has reduced the entire human experience to a chemical reaction, and if carrying that label is the criteria for preventing someone from buying a gun, that should make a huge, huge, huge dent in the number of gun purchases. Adam Lanza apparently exhibited enough mental stability that no one...not one person...had any problem with him playing with guns with his mother, not even his mother.

And since psychiatry has reduced the entire human experience to nothing but a chemical reaction, the idea of "mental disease" is the only thing being looked at with regard to Adam Lanza. Not one person, not one psychiatrist, has even considered the possibility that this person may have experienced a horrific event in their life that did something to their psyche. No, it couldn't possibly be that. Isn't that why you have the "he who shall not be named" attitude, Anderson? If he is determined to be insane, your “math” still doesn’t add up. What do you see, Anderson, when you look at his picture as a little boy? I’m guessing you prefer the more popular picture that makes him look somewhat crazed. Just maybe it's the picture of the little boy that we should all be paying more attention to.

To say that a 20-year-old kills his mother and 20 children and teachers "for no reason", as I have heard again and again, and
just leave it that is an insane conclusion. Today's co-host pronounced that he did it because he wanted his name to be mentioned repeatedly. Not only is that a ridiculously superficial explanation as to why this event took place, she is just another in a long line of people in the last few days who profess to know what he was thinking, and have no problem spewing whatever their myopic minds come up with as facts.

Hopefully, someone out there...certainly not Chris Cuomo...will come to the conclusion that it is of paramount importance to understand why someone would kill the children in Newtown, would kill the children in Scotland, would try to kill the children in Japan. The opinions provided by "experts" have such a narrow scope that I'm pretty sure the explanation we will be forced to settle for is "He who shall not be named was nuts." That's just not good enough.

Final question: Why is it that one is only considered mentally ill if several people are killed at one time? If you kill one person at a time, apparently your mental health is just fine. 12,000 murders a year by guns, and the day before they did it, the vast majority of the shooters were considered to be responsible gun owners and mentally stable.

Final, final question: How many guns were manufactured today, adding to the 300 million already in circulation?

Dear Anderson:
I watched your show today (Tuesday Dec 18th) and I want to thank you for showing the pictures of the teachers and children who died in Newtown. I live on the other side of the continent and seeing the pictures helped me to take in the full reality of this tragedy.

I would like to applaud you for the way you have covered this tragedy. Not saying the shooter's name, respecting the privacy of the families involved, not interviewing children... As usual, you are a breath of fresh air in the putrid ocean the media has become. Thank you!

I think advancements in tranquilizer guns should be made. If teachers/principles/security guards had emergency access to tranquilizers this could prevent mass destruction.
Worst case scenario someone falls asleep for a few hours. Best case scenario the shooter wakes up in jail.

Rather than responding to violence with violence I think this idea could save lives.

If your government does not change their gun laws after this senseless tragedy, there is something very seriously wrong with it and your culture. Assault rifles should not be in the hands of ordinary citizens and in your country, apparently, guns can be sold at gun shows without background checks. This is the 21st century not the old wild west. Please petition your government to make sweeping changes across every state in your country.

Good Morning, Anderson there is no reason why anyone should have an AR15 assault rifle or any assault rifle for that matter. Its like having a super sports car. eventually you will want to see what it does.... 120MPH or how much damage you can do with the firepower. I am not saying that all owners of these weapons have that mind set, but why the assault rifle. A believe in the right to bear arms but there has to be a limit. People purchase 2000 rounds of ammo for this rifle everyday, with military style carrying cases, for what reason baffles me. I believe the real problem is background checks. There are to many ex criminals who somehow obtain licenses for rifles and, incredibly, concealed carry permits for pistols here in New York State. NYC seems to be ahead of the game in this matter. Buying a weapon is just to easy. Go to a website order a weapon form any state and if you have even just a target permit it will be shipped to a local dealer in your area for pickup. Pretty much its that simple with just a simple target/premise permit and you can purchase any handgun or rifle... It is a shame what goes on. As a retired Police Officer I'm fairly aware of the use of fireams and the responsibility that goes with them. Police are trained for 6 months in the academy in the use of firearms and the liability involved if they are ever used. Civilians take a 2 hr class for a carry permit in NYS and then go to a range and fire at will. There is no doubt that serious background checks should be carried out both mental and criminal checks and family members and their history as well. If enforced there would be a lot less weapons in the "legal" wrong hands.

I appreciate what you are trying to do. You are honoring the memory of the victims of this tragedy, rather than the perpetrator. May I submit that you are falling short of your goal, because you are honoring all of the victims except the shooter and the family of that shooter?

As a first grade teacher for 2 years, and a 2nd grade teacher for one, I am heartbroken. We need to regulate, and regulate well, because protecting the lives of our citizens, and especially our children, amounts to a compelling national interest that is being thrown aside. I hear you, and I will insist that my Congresspeople step up with regard to gun regulation laws.

However, as a law student, and as a man dealing with mental illness in his family, I am disappointed that you raise the mental health issue in a cursory fashion in segments like the one I just saw, while dismissing it in fact in a real sense by refusing even to acknowledge the young man who was the shooter, AND YET ANOTHER VICTIM, of this shooting.

Like you, I am angry at the shooter. But, if we look one step beyond that anger, what do we find? As excellent as your coverage has been, it has not gone that step beyond. Your coverage is superb, except for the denial of the mental health issues that really, really seem to be at play here.

Wonderful stuff. I'm captivated. But you can do better, can't you?

Please consider.

Very respectfully yours,

Santiago
