Benzodiazepine withdrawal is SO painful & awful. They are highly addictive and Dr's know this and prescribe them anyway. It's really, really awful to watch a loved one go through withdrawal and you can't just "cold-turkey" it either; or you may have siezures. That's why Dr's lie about it & keep prescribing them. I am basing this opinion on first-hand information and my own research.
There are some people that have major depressive disorders as well as bi-polar disorders. I have both. On top of major depression and bi-polar I also have severe anxiety disorder as well. Sometimes you need the medication to help you be a better you. If Xanex or Valium help you be a better you and help you to raise your child/children better than so be it.
No one should judge someone who needs to take anti-anxiety drug unless you have walked in their shoes.
marlee matlin should have told that jerk ....wow! i would have suported you if you won a jerk award!
I am a mother who happens to take medication and my children are old enough to know the mother before medication and after and they would agree life with mom after medication has been Much more enjoyable and relaxing for All of us.
While I enjoy Anderson's show most of the time it frustrates me when not enough research is done on a topic. Anderson mentioned about having friends who have developed addictions to xanax but then mentioned antidepressents seemed okay. Just now he said Proxac was not addictive. Antidepressants cause a dependency in all those who take them. Doctors don't recognize it because drug companies deny it. Instead, when a person stops taking an antidepressant they go into withdrawal syndrome. The drug companies tell doctors that when a person reacts this way it's because they are "ill" and need the drug. Doctors are making lifelong addicts of people because unless they find someone who knows the real problem they can't get off the psychiaxtric drugs. All of them work this way. It is important to note that clinical trials done on these drugs for FDA approval need be no longer than 6 to 8 weeks yet there are people taking them for 10 or 20 years. Some great guests to explain about this would be Dr. Peter Breggin, Dr. Grace Jackson ( "Drug-induced Dementia") and investigative journalist Robert Whitaker ("Anatomy of an Epidemic"). Also, Dr. Allen Frances, former chair of the panel convened to edit the diagnostic manual (DSM-IV) psychiatry used for diagnosing patients and author of the new book "Saving Normal". This is a book that talks about how political and unscientific the process is for editing this manual.
Regarding the segment today on the mothers who are taking anti-anxiety or anti-depressants, I just want to say that anyone who has never experienced persistent anxiety or debilitating depression has no idea at all how it feels. I don't think meds should be prescribed or taken for normal anxiety or depression. However, some have been through many horrible life experiences, sometimes one thing after another, that makes it extremely hard to function. These meds are very helpful in getting to the point where, hopefully, they may no longer need them. I do not believe that a young person who may not have experienced a lot of personal tragedy or emotional pain has the knowledge or ability to understand those who have.

This controversy about Mom's taking pills, is nothing new. Don't you all remember in the 50's through 70's, that many mother's were taking a yellow pill, called, "Mother's Little Helper". I believe that was Valium.
So here is the issue: When a Mom is stuck at home with one or more children, and has little to no support from anyone. Is there anyone that has gone through that, day after day, after day... That seriously would not want to have some sort of helper to calm down the emotions and stress?
What a relief to be wealthy enough to have a Nanny, a babysitter, or a relative to give the Mom a break, once in a while.
My guess and hope is that those Mom's getting anti-anxiety meds, are using them just as needed, to help them deal with tough situations with their children.
I think that if the meds are used as prescribed, then that would probably be good for all.
I was disgusted at what one of your viewers tweeted during the show, saying any woman who needs to take medication should not have children. I am bi polar and was finally after years of struggles, diagnosed at the age of 33. They suspect I started exibiting signs as early as 12. I am now the mother of a 13 year old daughter and on top of that I am a Bank Manager. I have just recently celebrated my 25 year aniversary with the bank and have not missed a single day due to my mental illness thanks to the medication I am on. So for who ever that individual was, to say that people who need medication should not be parents, I challenge her to come face to face with me and see who is the more successful person, professionally and personally(by the way my grade 7 child gets 90s in her clsases and I do not push her!! I thin Anderson should do more shows on mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I just"came out" to my employer a year ago, and recently talked at a high school about my mnetal illness, the challenges and the successes and how the stigma has to end. I have kept this secret for 17 years and that is more than enough!

I was on the show and really didn't get my point out there mostly because Anderson stood next to me and I froze ;) but seriously, alot of people do need anti-anxiety meds....but should be sure that they are tested for other medical problems...mine was a thyroid condition....symptoms of the thyroid is DEPRESSION....so after a 2nd opinion and bloodwork i then began taking thyroid meds which really and truly gave me more energy and confidence to get thru each day....just asking people to get a 2nd opinion because doctors are wrong sometimes too.
