I love that you shined a light onto the schools, staff and victoms of schools that DISCIPLINE. I went to a few schools that did what was said on your show. Grade school wasnt as harsh the staff I belive knew what they were doing when a student needed to be restrained. In Highschool it was a diffrent story.. We had the chambers and students that the staff didnt like would just put them in there just so they wouldnt have to deal with them and that was a all semester thing most of the time.. It was horrorable it smelled or urine a little window covered with who knows body fluids and it had a lock.. From what I heard they took off the lock cause of fire hazzards but thats when I had to drop out. It was a constant battle everyday to have staff bullying you and yes torcher they would restrain with pain and hate in their eyes.. It was a daily thing for me comming home with bruises sometimes limping into my room.. I have learned a lot from today's show.. I believe they were being abusive.. In my 30's now nothing I can do but be reminded of the horror I went through and my Mom feeling helpless cause the school said it was their right.. Very sad if kids are still going through this still. It didnt help what that school did it made me disconnected from friends and family.. Sometimes I have to watch my actions and clear my head and think is it because of what happened to me during that time that still gets me disconnected from life.. but I thank you again for sharing this topic keep up the great work :)

Want to start off with Love Love Anderson, his laugh, the way he interacts with his co hosts & overall has fun on his show, & that he is upfront about issues even issues he doesn't know about..
I'm writing in on the subject of the young man that unfortunately died when restrained at the 'special' school he was living at for children with special needs. His special need was ADHD, he attended a school for kids with disciplinary needs, issues if you will.. Restraining at times is the only way of stopping a situation from escalating... I have done therapeutic holds, & will tell you I am 50 plus year old female, so when working with special needs people, a therapeutic hold is all you have.
This young man was in this school for a reason, I feel for his mom but for some reasons she put him there, she needs to be honest why she put him there, & of what his real issues were. He probably was a humble sweet boy, but least we forget he was a teenage boy with ADHD in a school with other special needs kids. ADHD is an impulsivity issue, unless treated one way or another, those with ADHD are impulsive. According to what she said he was playing for 45 minutes by himself, why by himself? If staff asked him to get off the court his impulsivity may have caused him to act out. I'm not saying staff were justified in there actions, but I also know that parents must sign off on procedures just like that mom said with her daughter with Autism. As always there is more to something than is being admitted & said.

In response to your school discipline piece. I worked in a day treatment facility for 9 years at Providence Comm. Services. I also was a Pro Act trainer which is a crisis intervention, restraint program. I never used physical restraint first, we always used crisis intervention first, by talking to kids, helping them deescalate, and offering therapeutic activities when the above didn't work, unless verbal direction didn't work and I was in danger or someone else was in danger including the child in crisis then you restraint. I didn't see this happening in the video at the basketball court where teenager was restrained and died!

Restraint should never occur on the floor. Restraint should only be used only as a last resort when a student is a threat to himself or others.
Prone or supine restraints should never, never be used....

I cannot not beleive that a school in this day and age would use such bararic methods in a school in 2013. We don't live in the dark ages here in Canada

just an answer to why Pit Bulls get a bad rap:
Gangsters use them to fight, for gambling and macho purposes. If you want a dog to win a fight you don't train a poodle, they took the strongest dog they could find, one with powerful locking jaws and made them mean by starving and abusing them so they are fearful and attack easily due to the abuse. A pit that has been loved and treated well will not attack. It is ironic too that greyhounds who are so shy by nature are used for human entertainment. Kudos to Shorty he is a real hero to these animals. Great show !!!!

As a mother of a child with learning and emotional needs, I am interested to learn the name of the man who to the audience about appropriate restraints. My son has been restrained many times over the years and now he is a young man at 15.

I wish to express my deep condolences to the family in the loss of their son/brother! Being a mother and a person who works in a job that may require the use of restraints I truly am heartbroken that such dire consequences occurred to her son.
