February 23, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of "Hearts For Flowers", a basketball free throw contest for befallen basketball star, John Flowers. John was Cal State Northridge's 1st recruit from out of state. He scored 64 points in a summer league game against NBA stars and was destined to go to the pros. He was Kevin Durant before Kevin Durant was Kevin Durant.
One week before school began, a horrific car accident took the life of John's brother and sister-in-law and after 28 operations both of his legs were amputated. The school held a ceremony for John at it's 1st home game, gave him $400 and informed him his scholarship was evoked. Also at the game was an unassuming 11 year old orthodox Jewish ballboy, Joshua Hay. Josh was incensed with the treatment to John and promised him that he would help him.
11 year old Josh began a basketball free throw contest - "Hearts For Flowers". Several NBA stars participated and donated (Magic Johnson, Stanley Roberts, Mark Jackson) and Josh was successful in raising over $30,000, enough for John's 1st set of prosthesis. The event received national attention - an African-American ballplayer and an 11 year old Jewish ballboy.
In the events of Oscar, the bladerunner, I think this might offset any negatvity regarding a double amputee. Josh and John are still good friends and both are now married with children.
