People don't come with manuels. If the past were so bad and rotten why are your here? If listening to the experts is suppose to guarantee success, knock yourselves out. Even more strange, why believe TV personalities when they expound on the wonders of "off the wall" parenting methods. These folks have a nanny for each child, a cook, a housekeeper and an assistant to help. I'd like to here the goodness of the "blossom method" from a mom from Idaho,Alabama or New Mexico whose family income is less than $60...,000/yearly trying to raise 4 childs. Real people can't afford to mess up much. If these methods fail, and they probably will, at least they can afford excellent child psychiatrist to deprogram their mistakes.

Remember this, when you ignore your child and pretend they are no there, when you grow old folks, they will pretend you are not there, I have seen this to many times, to know its a fact.
Have one son 46, married, no children.
Have problems relating to each other, most of the time.

When divorced my only son was 11 yrs. old. Sent to his father when 16.
Then, living away for 20 yrs and seeing him only once a year still have problems when now live 1 hour away. Although he pays my small rent.
He has hardly time to see me for months. He claims that his wife, work and other keeps him busy.
Lately, when I mentioned that I have not see him in moths, he intentionally did not sent card, phone etc for mother's day. He then after sent a email with his claim of not being hurtful to do that. But now, I feel still hurt after more than a month, what should I do ? any advise? mbc
I fear the generation of children that will be raised with this parenting style!
I think historically the human species has thrived because of attachment parenting. Babies survived infancy and toddlerhood due to optimal nutrition through breast milk, and easily adopted the parents' values because of the strong relationships.My gut feeling is that the more familiar authoritative parenting styles developed as government developed and parents decided they must also 'govern' their children. I'd be interested to read more athropological studies concerning this. I believe we can get back to the natural ways and they would help heal our power-hungry world.

The reason being those things you are manipulating this way or that are actually individuals & going in any extreme direction out the gate without stopping to take inventory of each different personality spells disaster. I have a couple of friends that are now adults who were products of attachment parenting & while one is seemingly adjusted, her brother just got out of rehab for the 3rd time & is living with mama at 32.
Balance is important. To try & shove your children in your narrow box is not fair to them as people, no matter how good your intentions may be or how strong your OWN emotional desires try & convince you it's in their best interest. Academic titles are known to raise just as many unhealthy children & adults than many with very little education. The success stories have always been higher in those familles that exercise good old fashion COMMON SENSE.

OK, wait. If parenting and taking care of your child is too exhausting, why have one? Apparently you never had something to take care of all the time like a pet. Once you have a baby who needs constant care, you have to stand by them, not go out with your friends.

May I add... My daughter is an only child. I kept her so close to me when she was a baby. She slept in our room, I never, ever let her cry herself to sleep or ignored her cries. My husband and I were always responsive. We would respond to her. That doesn't mean always giving her what she wanted, but we would respond, with our attention. Oh, I cannot believe when I hear people, especially mothers, condemn attachment parenting. My heart literally hurts. I can't believe this is where we are as mothers in the evolution process. 'Date nights', and 'I've gotta have sex with my husband', oh dear. That just makes me laugh. Have date nights with your FAMILY!(What a concept). If you must be alone with hubby, put the kids to bed and have a beautiful indoor picnic in the living room. Just the two of you. And your children won't feel that they've been 'abandoned' yet again, so mommy and daddy can get away from them for a while to enjoy more self-centered 'us' time. How SAD! As for sex? Come ON, people! Surely you can find a way. Get creative! Whoever said, "Spouse first, children second", was a selfish, SELfish, SELFISH idiot. My daughter's 'dependence' on us, her trust in our always being there for her, fostered tremendous independence. She is 16 now and as free as the wind. She is kind and considerate. She is giving because her parents demonstrated giving. Patient, because patience was shown to her. You can 'model' independence while being responsive to your children. Encourage independence, don't ram it down their throats while you continually detach yourselves to have ridiculous 'me' time! Oh, will we ever outgrow this selfishness! Forgive me. I hope to develop tolerance for selfishness in others. Why am I so angry? Well, maybe because I was the most selfish person you could ever meet before I had my child. Your child compels you to love and connect to him/her. Don't close your hearts any longer. Giving and 'sacrifice' will set you free. Believe me. And to those that I made screaming mad, good. Maybe you'll think just a little.
