Dog Found in the Trash Gets New Home

Monday, May 07, 2012 5:00AM
Anderson and Monday Co-Host Kristin Chenoweth welcomed Hope for Paws Animal Rescue founders Audrey and Eldad Hagar to the show to talk about a dog they saved from the trash.

The Hagars reveal they usually videotape their animal rescues, and when they found blind, flea-infested Fiona in the trash, they decided to upload the video to YouTube. The heartfelt video went viral, and thanks to some generous people, Fiona was able to get a new lens for one of her eyes, restoring her sight, and has also been adopted.

Audrey brought out Fiona, and being self-professed dog lovers, Anderson and Kristin held the dog… and for a brief moment, couldn't focus on anything else. Watch the funny moment!

After hearing about Fiona's story, PetSmart wanted to give Audrey and Eldad a special surprise. PetSmart donated $5,000 to the couple's charity, Hope for Paws, and they also donated $1,000 to Fiona for grooming.

Royal Canin, also touched by Fiona's inspiring story, also surprised the couple with a $2,500 food donation to Hope for Paws. Take a look…

I watched as Fiona was being rescued. When I first saw her in the trash I could feel my eyes filling up with tears. I felt in love with her. Now looking at her what was a waste of life it would have been if you did not show up. I love watching you rescue. I think I have watched them all. Please post more. God bless you for giving you such a big heart. It said "you can tell a man's soul by the way he treats animals." Be proud of that big soul that you have.

Is there anyway to submit an awe-inspiring animal rescue story about a dog put in the trash bag (then a trash can) by his owners and rescued by a teenage girl? If so, please let me know I can share this story.

I agree
I'm going to see how to email the show and ask for them to put them on again. It sucked and I wanted to learn a lot.

Your efforts on behalf of animal rescue organizations is commendable, but you missed the opportunity to really help the Hagars and Hope for Paws. I thought they were treated rather rudely, especially when Kristen plugged her favorite animal rescue group before Hope for Paws was (briefly) mentioned. Please consider having the Hagars on again with one of their other amazing rescues, then give them time to speak about their work and their book.

When I first saw the video on youtube of Fiona I cried, every time I see it I cry, haha! Its a sad story with a happy ending. What big hearts her rescuers have and her new family. Im such an animal lover it just broke my heart to see her in the condition they found her in. Im just so happy she was found and what an amazing doctor to perform eye surgery on her. She got a second chance and its heart warming to see that. Thank you Anderson for having her on the show!

I was also disappointed at how short this segment was. I would have loved to hear more from Eldad and Audrey! But I appreciate the fact that they were on the show and I was happy they received such a generous donation. Animal rescue rocks!!

I am extremely disappointed in the presentation of Eldad Haggar. You failed to show his work and how he accomplishes the outstanding job he does and what he does to rescue these animals.
I have been anticipating his appearance for weeks and could not believe the short shrift you gave this man who is a hero to so many, especially us in Los Angeles.
I was shocked when I viewed my recording and realized no one seeing him and Fiona for the first time will have no clue as to Eldad's profound work.

I rescued my little Long Haired Chihuahua back in 2005. He was just a couple of weeks old but had been attacked by a larger dog. He was missing his tail, his penis and had an open slit type wound up most of his belly. The original owners could not afford to take him to a vet and if no one wanted him they were going to let the big dog finish him. I took him and rushed him to the vet where he preformed emergency micro surgery, even though he wasn't sure he could save him. Some weeks after he recovered I discovered he was epileptic. He also has two discs in his back fused together. He still lifts his leg to urinate but it rolls down his other leg. It is difficult for him to go #2 as his muscle in that area doesn't work very well. Every time he does his "business" I have to wash him off. Still he is the cutest little dog and has been a great companion.

Im very confused why hope for paws founders got such short air time and cut off for silly antics. They are very fascinating people and have a lot more stuff than Fiona to their name. I think a lot of their fans could have one without several of your segments to give them attention and respect. This is not a regular animal rescue, they do what nobody else can. Please make it up to us who only watched to see them by having them back for more air time. They seemed to improv very well in what was a flustering and bizarre moment. They at least have class and humor.

Hi. I was disappointed that you didn't let Fiona's rescuers talk more about their rescue organization or show their book. It would have been nice to have given them an opportunity to do some fund raising by showing their book on the air. I thought it was rude that they got cut off when they were trying to talk about rescue and when K.C. was handed their book she just ignored it.

RE: Rescue Dogs Hall Of Fame, I don't do Facebook so here is my story. I am 79 years old with cancer and receiving weekly chemotherapy. My ****er spaniel died at age 14 and I was so lost. My family said "no more dogs." I kept looking on the internet and saw Wiggles, a ****er spaniel, who was rescued by a vet who would not put him down at one year old. He had been adopted and returned two times. He was sent from Tenn. to a foster home in PA from which I adopted him. I shed a few tears wanting to have a sit-on-my-lap friend to love me. Sara, a chemotherapy nurse, said "Please adopt Wiggles and if you die I will take him." So I did and Wiggles is now three years old and sits on my lap and puts his head on my chest and looks up into my eyes. He gives me a reason to live.
