Anderson Holds 37-lb. Cat, Meow

Monday, April 30, 2012 5:00AM

Anderson and co-host Kristen Johnston welcomed Dr. Jennifer Stekettee from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and a 37-lb. cat, Meow, to the show today.

Meow, whose 87-year-old owner could no longer care for him, is extremely overweight, and according to Stekettee, needs to go on a strict diet before he can be available for adoption.

Anderson held the cat, and quipped, "Oh, my Lord! Wow! I don¹t want to say it aloud, but he's like a big tub of jelly!"

Stekettee said Meow, who had already lost 2 lbs., but still has some weight to lose before he can go to a new home. Meow is only 2, but has difficulty walking due to his large size. Thankfully, he has no health issues like diabetes.

I thought our cat Tommy, who is 11 years old weighs 20 lbs. He's an indoor cat, so unless he runns around the house, he doesn't get any exercise outdoors.
I've lowered his amount of food to half can of "wet food" and a handful of kibble. He's a big, long cat, a typical tomm cat. He;s healthy and happy and we love him to pieces.

Any animal can become overweight even rats. http://voices.yahoo.com/how-keep-rat-tipping-scale-112283...

Just make sure you feed them the right amount of food for their species type and they get plenty of exercise.

Mr Cooper must be a cat lover: the way the 37 # cat drapped across his lap, while he was stroking it was wonderful! Stewart looked a bit amazed at the whole thing.

MEOW's middle name could be MWAH, the sound we make when we blow kisses across the air to a loved one, some distance away. Imagine a child's hand, my daughters' hands touching their mouths and lips, and extending their arms into a wave, as the imaginary kisses are blown toward us, their parents. We do the same in a return mwah toward our beloved children. Our daughters had not been born, had not known my own cat, Currie, whom I had named after the color of spice, Curry. Currie has long since passed on to cat-heaven in the 1970s. He was a surprise gift from my then boyfriend, soon to be fiance in a few more years of dating one another. A few years later, in 1976, my boyfriend and I were married. We are still married, happily ever after! We have two gorgeous daughters, who are age 27 and 23 years old, now young adults. The sounds of kinder-lach, the pitter patter of little childrens' feet, the pitter patter of my cat's feet too, LOL, are gone. I have occasional pain in my feet, and that's when I pull out my cane, or I stay at home. Oft times, when I have pain in my feet due to peripheral neuralgia and chronic medical issues, I think of my little ones and times gone by. The house is quiet, and I would love to have a cat again. I could take care of the lovely cat, MEOW, as I had done with Currie. I used to teach him tricks. He and I became so fond of one another that we he heard the keys in the door, he'd come running down the apartment hallway, slipping and sliding along the floor as I opened the door. He'd jump high into my arms and immediately start purring in happy contentment. What love! I'd play with Currie for hours, romping around the apartment, playing a great game where I'd make a hole in the end of a paper lunch bag, put my finger in the hole and rest the bag on the ground at one end of the long hallway. Then I;d call to Currie, and wiggle my finger inside the bag at floor level. He'd see the wiggling finger as if it were a mouse, and he'd run as fast as he could go to catch it, ending up with his head inside the bag and with his back half splayed feet apart on the floor, sliding quickly on the hallway floor. It waas so funny and he got lots of excercise. I had removed my finger before he caught up to the bag, so he slide safely. Currie and I, and my college roommates, had such fun playng this game. I took great care of Currie, feeding him well, but not making him overweight. I could do as well taking care of MEOW, hopefully making MEOW as happy and active and healthy as my Currie had been, and a bonus would be, my daughters could see how much more love a cat can bring into our home.
