Woman Teaches Cat to Swim

Thursday, August 02, 2012 5:01AM

Many people know that cats don’t like water, but as a good pet parent, animal columnist Mary Ellen says teaching your pet to swim is "a smart thing to do."

Mary Ellen taught her cat, Nymbus, along with other neighborhood cats, to swim -- saying she did it for a real reason. She says one out of 1,000 pets drown, and she had a swimming pool in her backyard where she didn’t want cats to end up and not know what to do.

"Most cats can swim, but what we wanted him to have was the confidence on how to get out," says this extreme pet owner, "It was a real teaching thing."

Take a look at how Mary Ellen taught her cat Nymbus to swim...

Mary Ellen says she taught her cat to swim very quickly. Watch as Animal Planet's John Fulton puts Nymbus in the pool, and see how he paddles across...

I thought it was wonderful that she taught her cat to swim and the reasoning behind it. The cat looked quite relaxed and calmly swam across the pool. I think she did an amazing job in teaches her cat to swim. With the right incentive and gentle teaching most animals can learn to swim. If you have pet rats I wrote an article explaining how to introduce rats to water which you can find here. http://voices.yahoo.com/how-introduce-pet-rat-water-76136...

It's our duty as pet parents to make sure our pets are safe, well taken care of and happy. I think she did a great job making sure they are safe if they get around a pool and the cat sure did look happy.

Swimming cats! That is awesome. This was so fun to watch, and it was neat to see how confident and relaxed the cat was when it was placed in the water and started to paddle away. I liked the way Mary Ellen described the reason for teaching her cats to swim. I have six cats and removed a hot tub because I was afraid of them drowning. I wish I had known I could have taught my cats to swim instead. : )

Mary Ellen and her cats are absolutely incredible?
However you misspelled the cat's name - it is Nymbus.

Thank you for helping to make people aware of swimming safety for animals.

Since animals are so darned precious, I especially love it when you have them on your show. Those dyed dogs were hilarious, as were the lizards & their man! Although dogs have always been my first love, MaryEllen had made me wish I wasn't allergic to cats. Nymbus is so beautiful, as are her other cats. Sure wish you could have shown more about how she taught her kitties to walk on a leash & in a stroller, and seen the "cat castle" her husband built so her cats can have the outdoor experience but be safe from traffic. I've never met her, but read her newsletters & learned all kind of tricks & tips! Thanks for the animals, Anderson ;)

Wonderful demonstration of cat swimming. Very exciting. I wi***** was on longer. A story this big should be on the show for at least 5 to 10 minutes. I was disappointed how short it was on the actual broadcast.
