Dr. Mike Dow's Salt Alternatives

Tuesday, June 26, 2012 8:50AM

On Anderson's "My Food Obsession is Destroying My Life" show, one guest discusses her addiction to salt, explaining that she puts large amounts of it on everything from ham sandwiches to ketchup.

In his book, "Diet Rehab," food addiction expert Dr. Mike Dow explains that "salt raises our blood pressure and causes dehydration. Besides potentially creating cardiovascular problems, dehydration causes us to eat more when what we really crave is water."

Salt is also a contributing factor in heart attacks and strokes. Dr. Dow recommends finding salt alternatives, which will help spice up your meal without sacrificing your health.

What about sea salt? I heard it is a better salt but can we have the same problems if we use is all the time. I find food too boring without salt.

I am surprised to observe that you are not mentioning Potassium Cloride as the best salt-substitute, espicially since the danger in too much salt ( or sodium) is an imbalance between Sodium and potassium. I don't tink that it would be easy to balance the 2 by eating greens as the source of potassium .
