A Family's Home Computer Gets Hacked

Thursday, February 23, 2012 5:00AM

Janice, a mother concerned about her children's safety online, is shocked to learn that a former professional hacker, Jim, is able to easily hack into her daughter's webcam, which has a clear shot of her daughter's bed.

"I'm so shocked… I'm stunned. I don't even know what to say to it. It's frightening," Janice says.

Jim was able to hack into the computers belonging to Janice's family members by previously sending them an e-card. Once the family clicked on the link, he was able to remotely access their computers.

Hear more from Jim in this video about how sex offenders can hack their way into your family's life...

Thank You for the courage to be honest and caring in your reporting. What a refreshing addition.
One of my adult children is partner w/ a young women that was sexually abused similar to one of your guests, 6yrs old to 16 by a religious father (RC).
Question: Do experts in the field think that institutions toleration of sexual abuse contribute to that behavior?
The father (abuser) is still free as a bird. Wife & Priest are aware because my partner and I confronted the abused person's mother. NOTHING happened! My concern: Who is he abusing now or when will he begin similar abuse again. How can they be stopped w/out doing further harm to victim(s)!

I agree- it was good information- but how do you check to see if your computer has been hacked in that way- and how do you remove the offending program????? My girls use their webcams for skype so taping up the camera (while a good idea) might not be effective. I would like info on how to check out a computer to see if it has been compromised and what to do it if has..

Again Anderson POOPER fans the fear. Ironically, the groups most known for computer hacking were members of so-called "anti-pedo" groups, who tried downloading CP onto people's computers to set them up.

Of course, Pooper needs ratings, and the media knows it is a simple formula. S+E+X+ offenders = ratings. Simple huh? Hackers have many other reasons to hack your computer-- credit card/ personal info, using your computer as a mule for hiding illegal pictures or to power DDoS attacks on various websites (as Anonymous has been prone to do). But that doesn't scare people enough (but the CP spam on your computer SHOULD since many people have faced charges over this). Shame on Anderson Pooper.

It would be an awesome show if you taught us how to prevent being hacked. We all know we are all the time, but what to do? I'm really interested...

I'm going to call everyone I know and direct them to this video, this is a horror story. To think someone could be watching my niece right now, makes me want to scream. I'm going to warn them, but I'm also going to tell them to put a piece of tape over the camera on their lap top.

Interesting that you use the term "sex offender" in all the clips and the public will assume you are talking about someone that has been convicted and on a registry.....please folks understand that 95% of sex crimes come from within the family, an acquaintance or someone known to the family.
My next comment is why would any child or teen need a webcam in their bedroom....bad idea unless you are OK with them posing nude and sending to a friend...which, when they send it becomes distribution of child pornography and the mandatory minimum is 5 years....and if you don't think there aren't kids as young as 8 and 10 on the registries, think again....education is key.
