Octavia Spencer Explains How 'The Help's' Minny Originated

It was a diet, a scorching 108-degree walking tour in New Orleans and 100 extra pounds that nurtured a grumpiness in Octavia Spencer, which helped create the role of Minny in "The Help."

"I basically got the part because of my relationship with Tate Taylor, the director,” says Octavia. She and Taylor were production assistants (PAs) together and “go back 17 years."

Take a look at Octavia interview with Anderson...

Andrerson I love what you are doing with your show. I wish you would put your giggle back at the end credits!
I read The Help and loved it however I wanted more! I was vested in these women and wanted to see where they went after the book. I had the opportunity to visit Meridian MS a few years back. I live in WA state and I was shocked to witness the southern attitudes toward African Anericans. This little community has segregated themselves. The white kids and affulent blacks attend private schools while the poor white and the majority of the black children attend publc schools. The public education they provide in my oppinion is at best marginal! My daughter-in law can not do math at the basic levels! There are stores and bars that me as a white woman would not think of entering. It made me ill to think there are still such blatent discriminatioin. When I was shopping I would always smile at anyone and the blacks looked at me like I was nuts. My son was holding a door for his dad and an elderly black gentleman was behind them. He motioned for the man to enter the store and the man said "You aren't from around these parts, cause no white man would hold the door for no black man." My son said to him that he was from WA and finally the man went in and said thankyou!
I am so thankful that my grandsons are in WA state and away from the hateful uneducated people.
