How Could Daniel the 'Miracle Dog' Have Survived a Gas Chamber?
In October, the 20-pound beagle Daniel was found as a stray and sent to an overcrowded animal shelter in Florence, Alabama. He was scheduled to be euthanized with 18 other dogs, but somehow survived the death sentence without even getting sick.
"They're saying that the weight of gas is heavier than air, and maybe he got an air pocket," says Linda Schiller, founder of the dog rescue group Eleventh Hour Rescue. "But it's a one in a million shot that an animal would survive the gas chamber. Some people really just think it's a miracle."
Joe and Geralynn worked with Eleventh Hour Rescue to adopt Daniel, who was wanted by hundreds families after news spread of his incredible survival story.

SHARED A LOT OF PETITIONS AND I HAPPY THAT PEOPLE WOKE UP AND ACTING AGAINST GAS CHAMBER BUT I WONDER WHY THEY NOT ACTING AGAINST DEATH, HEALTHY PETS DEATH, DEATH FOR SPACES. ITS HORRIBLE. POOR PETS DIED THAT TIME THEIRS STUPID OWNERS EAT, DRINKS, WATCH TV AND ETC. WHY PEOPLE NOT ACTING FOR THAT TO FINE SUCH OWNERS AND USE THIS MONEY FOR PETS. SHELTERS WORKERS ASKING TO PLEDGE MONEY AND PEOPLE DO THIS TO SAVE PETS LIVES BUT IN A TIME THEY DISCOVERING THAT THIS PETS HAD BEEN RIP.
I SURE ALL WHAT I DISCRIBED IS 1/4 OF ALL VICTIMS PEOPLE DO AGAINS PETS.
I WISH TO TELL I CONSIDER ALL WHAT YOU DO. I NOT LIVE IN USA BUT I AM WITH YOU ALL.
I THINK ALL PEOPLE WHO HURTS PETS, DUMPS, SURRENDING THEIR PETS SHOULD BE CONVINCE OF OFFENCE, LIKE THEY DID IT TO HUMAN, THEY HARM HIMAN.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WORK AND ALL STARTS FROM SMALL THING AND I SURE FINALLY PEOPLE STOP KILLING PETS WITHOUT ANY AND STUPID REASONS
Thank you SO much for publicizing this story. There are so many animal issues out there that need publicity...ie...puppy mills. Please consider doing more stories to help the naimals!
What makes this story important is not that Daniel survived and is a "miracle" dog, but it highlights a problem an inhumane problem in our country.
Even though sometimes it in necessary to put animals down in shelters, many are put down to just the over crowing of shelters, not just for health reasons.
Most importantly putting dogs into gas chambers is very inhumane and a horrible way to die.
States are able to euthanize animals without the use of gas chambers, so i think before making a change of how many animals are being put down and why, the method needs to be changed first.
The Miracle Dog, Daniel is not a Beagle. He looks to be either an English or American Foxhound. AF are a bit taller. Look them up, the markings are similar to the Beagle, but the heads are a different shape and they do not have the squatty legs. I have an American Foxhound named Maximus. He is super sweet and friendly. Doesn't bark much, but loves to howl.
Thank God 'Miracle Dog Daniel' survived the Alabama Gas Chamber.
Sadly millions of perfectly wonderful dogs suffer this cruel and inhumane fate. There are cheaper and kinder methods to do this, if/when necessary. The money saved could be used to spay and give these poor animals and new chance.
We need a push to finally legally end this practice in all 50 states.
Daniel's story reminds me of that amazing Mary J. Blige song "THE LIVING PROOF".
ANDERSON we need a voice to get this going. We need a HERO.
Plain and simple - it was a miracle!
The story you did on Norton was so touching, I cryed and had to play it twice.
I wanted to know if norton got a home and im so happy that he did.
I just cant believe there are people out there that treat animals with such crulty. Its terrible. thank you Anderson for such a touching story.
Thank you Anderson, for caring about animals and the problem of overcrowding and inhumane euthansia. And since they were not mentioned, I would like to send out a very SPECIAL thank you to Karen Rudolph who pulled Daniel from the shelter and then called Pilots N Paws pilot Scott Messinger and rescue volunteer Terrie Varnado to see if they knew a rescue that would accept Daniel. KUDOS to Terrie who coordinated the entire flight and added even more dogs to this lifesaving flight. Huge thank you to pilot Scott who wanted to adopt Daniel initially but his condo board said three dogs was the limit :-) Terrie reached out to Robyn Urman with ResQ Inc in NJ who regularly takes in rescue dogs from the south, THANK YOU ROBYN. She asked Eleventh Hour if they had roomm they did,and now Daniel has a loving home with Joe and Geralyn. Daniel holds a special place in so many hearts and through his story, may other animals be saved from a tragic ending. Please alter your pets!

Thank you for telling the story of Daniel on today's "Anderson". He is such a beautiful and loving creature! I can't even imagine what he went through watching those other dogs die around him. We must put an end to euthanizing animals in this country because it is inhumane.
Unfortunately, animals often pay for the sins of lazy careless humans who don't spay and neuter their pets or abandon them when they get tired of them. Pets are not disposable items, they are a lifelong commitment. If people would understand that we would not have such an enormous homeless pet population.
I am so glad there are organizations like Eleventh Hour Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society who understand that animals are precious and are against euthanizing them. I encourage everyone to support these organizations!
I hope "Daniel's Law" is passed in every state soon! Keep calling your state senators and representative until it's passed in your state.
I am so glad that Anderson is an animal lover and I hope he will continue bringing us animal stories in the future. I wish he would do a story on the horrible abuse of animals in slaughterhouses all over this country.
Those were beautiful gifts the show gave Daniel and his parents! I wish Daniel a long happy life; he certainly deserves it!
I thought I had finally stopped crying today after having to euthanize my wonderful dog who finally, after 9 months of cancer remission, lost his battle. I had a wonderful vet come to our home and give a graceful, peaceful exit...I can't imagine the pain and torture of the gas chamber death. I actually thought this was out-lawed in most states but found that its city by city, shelter by shelter and of course all about money. This must stop!! Please put more of your power behind spay/neuter and humane treatment of shelter pets. Thank you!
thanks for all the great humane shows! going forward, can you please do a show on how our country disposes of pets? (dogs and horses) Huge following on this from rescues across the country. Dogs are legally shot, gassed, heartstick ( ugh), and only some states use humane euth shot. Horses are a whole different horror. would be so very grateful to you for getting the 'right' word out.
Anderson, as a fellow dog lover, you MUST do an entire show on the pet overpopulation story. It's a nightmare. Breeders are a NIGHTMARE and people STILL buy from them and from pet stores. Every time a person buys a dog, they just killed one in a shelter. It's such a horrible thing, please consider it. Thanks for bringing us Daniel's story, the thought of him and others suffering the gas like that makes me cry. It's so wrong.
WOW what a great story. Daniel definitely was chosen to tell his story and save countless other animals from the awful fate that was almost his....DEATH.
Good for the Dwyers who camr to Daniels rescue...They will love him forever for his a a very special doggie....Jus*****ching how happy Daniel was on the show brought tears to my eyes. His tail did not stop wagging.Hope Daniel and the Dwyers have many happy years together.
