Regarding hoarders, or those who hold on to STUFF: Go through the stuff, and write down in a computer file what comes to your mind, a day in your life, reminded by this thing. Date this. Then also take a picture of it,and match up the photograph with your story, on line or in a scrap book, or both, and Voala, you have a wonderful life history to leave to your children -- without the stuff. These pictures take much less room than the actual stuff, and you now can give the stuff to your children now, or have a yard sale or give the things away. FREEDOM!!! It solves the sentimental problem and the space and orderly problem all at once. I have boxes of photographs going way back, but when i pick certain ones, off they go to family. Find out which of your children or grandchildren is/are interested in family history, and pass on your informal or formal research. i've a big family so I want a print to go to each. Others say make a web site. So much stuff is too much, and thank goodness for computers. Family heritage is amazing, and computers are great, but keep a hard copy for backup to pass down. From boxes and boxes, even medical and tax records which can be discarded through shreaders, to a handful of pages or a scrapbook. Really. The pictures also help you with a will, to direct what goes to whom. no problem. SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY. I'm ancient, and do not want my children to have to sift through the things when I die.

I could easily be a hoarder. But I do from time to time clean out. I'm pretty good at organizing too. My problem is shopping. Shopping second hand and estate sales. Growing up, shopping is what my family did for entertainment. So I was never involved in sports or hobbies. It was shopping or cooking and eating. That's what we did every weekend.
I just think if hoarders could learn how to throw out the trash and organize what's left they wouldn't have a problem.

If not for my husband's aunt, I would not understand this issue at all. She lost her only child, a 2 year old daughter, to cystic fibrosis. She and her husband than divorced as a result of not being able to face the loss. She remarried, and a few years later her husband died from pneumonia. By that time, she had started to collect "things". She had no control over WHO she lost, but what she COULD control was WHAT she collected and held onto. When she died, no one knew for several weeks and her body was discovered by the mailman. No one else had entered her house for 30 years. Her two story house with basement was filled to the ceilings with 40 years of "stuff". It took her relatives 5 months to clean out and prepare her house for sale. It was a "Craftsman" house on a park, a very desirable area, but the house sold for only $20,000 because it had deteriorated so much. She was a sweet, religious lady with issues no one could get her to face.

I am reflecting on your 1st De Cluttering tips. I just cleaned my closet and I have about 30 shirts and maybe 15 skirts and pants. I just can't see how to lose the clothes.

3. DISCIPLINE

For instance, if you have picked up your dry cleaning<,> be sure to take of the wire hanger and put on your nice hangers.

3. DISCIPLINE NOTE <***> LETTERS ADDED TO CORRECT SENTENCE>>>

For instance, if you have picked up your dry cleaning <,> be sure to take of the wire hanger and put on your nice hangers.

Without the discipline, all organizing tips fall apart.

watching these shows of hoarders makes me wonder how much is really a sickness and how much is laziness.I always ask myself "did ur mama never make u clean ur room??" I can understand the urge of shopping, but u need money for that too. I can understand wanting to collect something, but only a few of these hoarders actually have a collection of something. Some of them actually admit to just eat from paper plates so they dont have to do dishes, thats being lazy and a pig...
So what im saying is, i dont understand this.

I find this show (hoarding) very fascinating! I have become very disciplined over the years, to get rid of stuff. I donate most of it...some of it I trash. I have found that this is the best way to live in a small space. Obviously, I don't have a hoarding issue, but I feel for people who do. It seems that this issue is more prevalent now than ever. Why is this?

A coupla days ago, I checked in my master closet and found several items and took them promply to the local charity resale shop. I felt better all way round. Also, the guy who lives nearby is a hoarder, O MY what a mess! His car is very full of envelopes, papers, etc. His house EVEN worse.

On a brighter note, I watch the ANDERSON show a lot and think it has potential. I do indeed like some of the subjects, etc. he presnts on TV. Refreshing Anderson, stay in there.
