Are You a Hoarder?

Do you suspect you suffer from Hoarding Disorder (HD)?
Whether it's teapots, newspapers, or even pets, do you collect or keep WAY too much stuff? Are you or someone you know drowning in all the things you can't let go of? If so -- please tell us your story.

LouAnn - I totally understand you. My problem is I have run out of closet and cabinet space to "put things away." Also, just like your lampshade, I am worried that if I throw something away that I WILL NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO REPLACE IT in my later years. Wish I could come help you sort, straighten up and clean up. Would love to hear from you to see how, or learn, how to handle this type of problem. Michelle in Houston, TX
I am not a hoarder, but what I would say, which may sound harsh to any of the hoarders is, IE: Josh for instance is, if I got married and had a child, I wouldn't let you see the baby in your house until you got help and made it livable.
I'm sorry, there's no reason for that. I had to move into an apt. from my home with my family and had to get rid of things that were very sentimental, now when I think about it, they're just things. I'd much rather die knowing I saw my grandchildren. Tell her that!
What was the name of the professional on 2/22 that was talking with the woman who hoards about assigning a number to each piece of clutter. She also suggested asking whether or not a person "loves" an item.
Thanks~
Where is the segment on hoarding when the Ph.D Psychologist gave the tips on how to get started. What was her name ?
Hope you put that part of the episode on your website. :)

It’s a pretty sensory experience, let me put it that way. There’s obviously the assault on your eyes of the quantity of the clutter, then there’s the appreciation of what a mishmash the clutter is. Sometimes there’s more than your average share of odor, dust, mold, or other types of structural damage.

My mom is a hoarder. My brother, sister, and I have tried to help her many times, to no avail. She moved out of our childhood home, rented it out still full of crap, and is now filling up her new home with stuff. She also has a 40 foot shipping container full of stuff. She seems to value the companionship her stuff gives her. When she does try to clean up, she ends up moving the stuff from one room to the next. It makes me really sad.
What about the person who is super organized...can find anything...has all like objects positioned together...and their space is full of items? Are they still considered a hoarder? People talk about the messiness of hoarding...well, what is the person is not at all messy, items are taken care of beautifully and all perfectly organized?
Just a short note to let you know how much I like your show.
You always get to the center of problems people have and are in denial about. Your guests are very helpfull. I jus*****ched the Hoarding show. One of my helpfull hints is to do one drawer a day,I set the timer for 15 minutes, so I can't waist time. Then that's it for the daily drawer duty. It's not over whelming and it keeps me in a routine.
The hoarders in my family line go back >150 years when
they came from Europe to set up a colony in early Dallas
--bringing with them their musical instruments, their books,
their cures, and their beliefs and more!
Every family has its stories so when we started a nonprofit
campus for kids in the Davy Crockett National Forest, we
loaded with the art and history and music and recipes, etc.,
that would not only keep our heritage alive but would be a
place where all kids could explore family roots and beliefs
exchange ideas with others, and learn to create and express new ideas on their own---as their grandparents (and greats)
had. You can visit it at: www.treetopsintheforest.org.
or better yet--AFTER HUNTING SEASON IS OVER--come in person!
We'll show YOU some of the hoarded treasures that encourage
all children to know more about their roots...and learn to be
hoarders of their own family's treasures.

My sister is a hoarder. She really needs help professionally. She's been trying to clean her house for over 10 years. Recently she bought a mobile home and still can't get her house cleaned out to sell it. We, her family have tried to help but as we trough things away she takes them back out. She has brittle diabetes and is in poor health, is 74 years old and is always stressed out. Is there anyway you could help her? If so, please contact me. She lies in Akron, Ohio. Thank you.
