What Can Trigger Eating Disorders?

Thursday, June 21, 2012 5:00AM

When someone suffers from an eating disorder, it is no one's fault. While it is important to understand that no one specific person or problem is to blame, it is also important to know that there are certain situations or behaviors that can trigger eating disorders.

What triggers an eating disorder can vary; it could be a life-altering change or something seemingly small. Dr. Ramani has provided some situations that may trigger eating disorders in the list below.

My 22 year old son, Nicholas, is battling anorexia. He currently weighs 98 pounds. We live near Myrtle Beach SC and can find no support groups and had a very hard time finding a therapist experienced in eating disorders. Now we are facing his health insurance denying coverage. The insurance is dropping him as of July 6 and we have no idea what we will do after that. Nicholas physically and mentally is in a dangerous state and I feel so helpless as his mom. Our income is very limited since I had major surgery in March and my husband is permanently disabled with a heart condition. I am currently looking for employement since I lost my job when I was out on medical leave after my surgery, but when I do find a job, I still will not be able to get insurance coverage for my son since he is 22 years old. I contacted several national organizations associated with eating disorders trying to find help in our area. There is NONE! I could hardly believe in this big vacation spot/seas side town with 2 colleges that there is no support groups or counseling centers for people with eating disorders. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am worried that if we dont get help my son is in danger of dying. Thank you.

Please help me with my food addiction. As a sufferer of food addiction for 52 years I am begging that you please consider doing a show about this silent killer. It destroys lives, dreams, hopes, aspirations, self-esteem and future goals. Like illegal drugs it gives you a quick high, you’re addicted before you know it and every time you need a fix it costs more money and takes you longer to get satisfied. Unlike street drugs it is legal and found on every street corner, at every drive through and in everyone’s home. Much like alcohol it comes in many types and flavors and can potentially leave you intoxicated, cause you to act irrational, and leave you to suffer a painful hangover. Unfortunately, food doesn’t require an ID to obtain and no amount of maturity or warning is placed on the package. Regretfully, drugs, alcohol and food addictions are slowly taking the lives of thousands – just like me and no one seems to take food addiction seriously. All we hear is DIET all we see is DIE.
