Plan to Transition Your Adult Kid Out of the House

Monday, November 21, 2011 8:36AM

Of course you love your kids, but there comes a point when parents want to be "empty nesters," or feel it's time for their adult children to move out and move on. According to the US Census Bureau, one fifth of all adult men between the ages of 24 and 35 are still living at home.

This may be a result of high unemployment rates (14.9% for people between the ages of 20-24 years old), psychological issues or social complexities, says expert Mel Robbins. Do not, however, let these reasons guilt you into keeping your kids in your home. You have a right to your own space, and to teach them about responsibility.

If you still have a child living at home and need help getting them out or keeping the peace, follow our expert’s advice for transitioning your kids out of the house.

I have a 45 yr old brother, who lives in my moms unfinished basement. Pays $200 a month rent, but does not do anything. Does not do any house work, yard work, dishes cooks.....NOTHING.
He smokes in her house when my son is there so now my son does not go there. I lost my job last year and we had a month that was really hard and I need to ask my mom for some grocery money, and he got mad that I asked for money. These guys have nothing on my brother.

I was a bit offended at Anderson's reaction to the fellow who said he was living in the finished "basement" of his mother's home. Our house has a finished lower level that is every bit as nice as the upper floors complete with kitchenette, dining bar, work out space, tiled bath, living room and bedroom with lots of storage. It has a separate outside entrance and plenty of natural light. You need to get out of your big city apartment, Mr. Cooper and into the 21st century!
