Cher on Chaz's Transformation: 'Same Child, Different Wrapping'

Thursday, August 23, 2012 5:00AM

Chaz Bono's mom, the multi-talented singer and actress Cher, calls in to today's show and shares with Anderson her feelings and level of comfort with regard to familiarizing herself with Chaz's transition.

"Was it uncomfortable or difficult for you at first to kind of learn about Chaz?" asks Anderson.

"As a mom, you have a child and then all of a sudden, you have a different child, but you have the same child," says Cher. "So it's very hard to kind of twist your mind around to the adjustment. But then when you look at it, and you're around your child, you just think, 'Oh, no difference.' Same child, different wrapping."

Hi, I love everyone's support for this. You are all wonderful.

For those that are against and say, for example: "What God creates, man should not mess with. Chaz/Chasity was created as a girl and that is the way she should have stayed."

This is what I have to say to you: You should never consume bread, pasta, ice cream, crackers, cookies, or anything else that is "transitioned" from one form to another, if you really believe that man should not mess with what god created.

How do you think there is bread? Does it not come from flour that was transitioned from wheat?

Before you go spouting off religious and offensive garbage, get an education. Look to the Qur'an in Iran. See what the religious people there have to say about people who are transgender.

Thank you for your time and may you all have blessed children who are transgender :)

I don't care what your sexual preference is, unless of course you prefer children and then you should be humanely euthanized, just don't rub my face in it. OK? OK!

Let me preface this with: I LOVE ANDERSON! Anderson the interview with Chaz would have been MUCH better if you'd just interviewed him NOT his mother. Yes, I know Cher is famous, but Chaz is an adult man, a brave individual (willing to not only live, but also share his truth) & is more than capable AND worthy of being interviewed without him mom! I actually find it very disrespectful to Chaz. He deserved his own time with you Anderson (without the "bells & whistles" of Cher).
By the way, I like Cher, she did say some great stuff, but....

As the mother of a transgeneder child it took me a long time to understand why it was so difficult for me. I love my child, whether (s)he is a girl or a boy. You spend your life trying to your encourage your child to grow into a happy, healthy, capable, and self-confident adult. Trying to give them a great childhood and to ensure that their life is better than yours was. You see all the wonderful things about them. What hurts is to realize that, despite your best efforts, your child is so dissatissfied with who they are, that they have to go to the extremes of gender reassignment to be happy with themselves.

I think Cher forgot this is a ratings grabbing show. That's why she appeared on it isn't it? Controversy is the key to their viewership. The fact that Chaz was on it at all -even admitting he had no talent- was controversial enough!

I do not believe Chaz should have lasted so long on DWTS only because he had difficulty performing the routines and others that were better were eliminated.

I must admit that until I watched DWTS and watched Chaz's interview with Anderson I had negative thoughts about him. I want to thank Chaz for giving me the opportunity to change my thoughts about transgender people.

I agree with Cher regarding the comments by the judges - they made me cringe i.e. the penquin example.

I hope Cher has changed from this as well because I remember her being so negative and judgmental while performing at a show with MLJ when he faced charges.

While I believe that Chaz has the right to do to herself/now himself whatever he chooses and embrace whatever sexuality he chooses, I don't think that he has the right to shove our faces in it and make the general public share in his experience. It should be a private decision and kept private. I enjoy watching DWTS, but Chaz should not have been a contestant, at least not at this time. He is grotesquely overweight and can hardly move. He obviously was in no condition to enter such a contest. If they offered him the opportunity, he should have declined. There are plenty of network programs that are less popular that he could take part in without entering one of the most popular programs on TV. If he insists on forcing himself on the general public, then let him enter "Survivor", "Fear Factor" or other such programs next and endure that hardship, not just the 'pretty boy' venues.
Cher definitely has the right to defend her son, but again, why does the general public have to suffer through it. Chaz has just taken advantage of his mother's celebrity to bring his sex change decision to the forefront of national TV. Not many people are interested in what he does. And it's not fair to say we have the right to change the channel because the programs he has chosen to use to "spread the news" are the more popular programs on TV watched by families. I am a very open-minded person but am just a little tired of this whole senario. Enough is enough.

If you open a can of worms, what comes out? worms, worms and more worms. That show has deterioted to queers, steers and what ever "it" thinks it is. Too bad if that is a "star" out of what ever. It's a loser anyway you look at it. I hope this is last year for that piece of trash and something worthwhile will take it's place.

I watched Chaz grow up.Never happy, never seeming to know which direction to go,sad. Now he's happy, smiling, full of self-esteem and proud to let the public see him,HAPPY.As a mom,I agree with Cher,he's no matter what, her child! Can't people be happy that he's happy, even if you don't agree? I love you,Chaz. And I am so glad you are you.

I think Chaz did what HE had to do to maintain hi sanity. I for one am a Transsexual also and totally understand why and the what fors of His transition to get HIS body to match His brain. I spent 59yrs in HELL and then God gave me the strength to become the real me a male to female transexxual and it has nothing to do with sex its all about gender. People need to get there minds out of the gutter and off the porn sites. I am a woman who just happens to be transsexual! Thank you.

I don't get how slapping a beard on a woman who isn't "gay", they are considered transgendered is in any way pioneering. God created man and woman. So no amount of surgery or labels will change Chastity. I was born a man, am a man, have a beard, and a... what do you know? A penis. Should I consider myself pioneer for non-transgendered humans? Perhaps I should. Just because you turned left doesn't make it right. Just because you check "male" doesn't make you a man, nor does the beard. And I heard her mother hollering over that little ewok gig on DWTS. Now what kind of Man needs his mommy calling his job? A Woman. You should be ashamed.

I think what Chaz Bono has done is a remarkable thing. Not only did he come out of the closet and say he was not happy as a woman, and that he was really a man in a woman's body, but he took the biggest step any human can take, under those circumstances, and had his sex changed to the man he needed to be. He did this for himself and for his own self-esteem, and I think more people who feel as Chaz felt should have the opportunity to do likewise.

So Barbara, if you had conjoined twins that could live a normal life just conjoined at the belly, you wouldn't have the surgery to seperate them? I bet you'd think otherwise. So what is the difference for Chaz?
