Anderson: 'I Want to Protect You'

Monday, October 03, 2011 8:12AM

Bullying doesn't just happen to boys. It happens to girls as well. Anderson meets 12-year-old Elise, who is bullied at school.

“... I got picked on a lot because rumors started spreading, and people kept on really hurting me,” says Elise. “There were about like 20 or 30 kids all around and they just -- it got so bad that I was crying in a corner when these kids were just like tormenting me in a corner.”

“Oh, my God,” says Anderson. “You're the sweetest girl. I want to protect you. I want to do something right now. Give me their names. I'll track them down.”

What are you doing to stop bullying? How are you protecting your children?

Mom to a seven year boy/ who is being bullied
617 days ago

I watched your show on bullying Sunday night, bullying needs to be stopped, it is happening right here in our small town of less than 1000 people. We live on the border of Minnesota(Baudette) in Rainy River, Ontario Canada. My son and grandson have been getting bullied for some time now, I've spoke to the principal at their school, now we just wait to see what happens, I would hate to see us pull him out and send him to another school, why should he run from the issue? I also work in the education field and I see bullying here at the high school and we deal with it the best we can. WE NEED TO STOP THE BULLIES, FROM ONE PARENT TO ANOTHER!

I am Dina Horowitz, L.C.S.W., School Social Worker and Practicing Psychotherapist in the Bellmore, Long Island, N.Y. area, having over 20 years of combined professional experience working with students, with much of my efforts directed towards child and adolescent treatment, "at risk" youth, anti bullying interventions.

"WHYMEAN" is an anti bullying youth mediation program that I've developed, based on my years of working with students, knowing that in order to truly eliminate bullying from our schools, we must get to the roots of the problems, in an effort to mediate, resolve this widespread problem

"WHYMEAN" programming offers a unique problem solving approach, provides comprehensive programming, action planning, problem solving tools to be utilized, supportive efforts directed towards all those that may need it the most !!

"WHYMEAN" is a program that truly makes a difference, not just talk about making a difference, but actually achieves results, with decreased bullying behaviors, increased peer and parent awareness and improved peer socializations evidenced within the elementary, middle and high school settings.

"WHYMEAN" is comprehensive programming I'd like to introduce to school district administrators state wide, also sharing share with you an important computer technology resource, a computer platform which has come to my attention, that is able to do what I've previously had to do by hand (in terms of organization, tracking of student data), but now with this computer platform, we are able to create a system which allows for ongoing monitoring, reporting, tracking of all information, so that no child goes unnoticed, no voices go unheard.

As a School Social Worker and Psychotherapist, I am fortunate enough to enter the lives of students on a daily basis, this is a joy and a privaledge, helping students to achieve success, overcome obstacles presented, to never give up on themselves, has and always will be my professional committment and life long goal.

Throughout my years of working with students, I continue to believe that often times it can take just one person to believe in you, to see what may not be apparent, that may help to make a world of difference in the life of a child.

It is this belief that continues to motivate and inspire me on a daily basis.

"WHYMEAN" was created based upon this belief..

I would welcome the opportunity to introduce "WHYMEAN" anti bullying youth mediation programming to school district administrators, New York State wide, to explain how and why "WHYMEAN" works so effectively, so that I can train clinicians, staff to understand the workings of this program, serve to fit your individual school resources, working together, we can do it, we can truly make a difference, helping to end bullying in our schools.

"WHYMEAN" programming....

LET ME SHOW YOU HOW...

Sincerely,
Dina Horowitz, L.C.S.W.

I have a 10 year old son who's being bullied at school for over the last 2 years. He's being called a girl and even threatened with violence. He told me that he can handle it. But still I'm afraid that he can't and that he will be insecure. He doesn't want me to talk to his teacher about this.
This bylling is a new issue for me, because in my time bullying was something very rare and I wasn't being bullied and was also not a bully. And I'm not sure what to do about this. My feeling is to talk to the teacher about it, but I don't want to make it worse for my son. If anyone can give me some advise, please?

I frist want to say how sorry I am for the families loss. To have such a promising life cut short so needlessly. I came from a large poor family which moved a lot. The bullying that my sibling and I was subject to, was sometime violent and cruel. We even were sent to hospitatls over some of the violents that we suffered. I was especialey sensitive to it as I was aready fighting a learning disorder. I had no one who would either lison or felt even cared. They keep telling me that was normal and that all kids get bullyed at one time or another. I was bullying from first grade thur high school. It has affeced me my whole life. First my self esteme was in the toilet and I never realy made friends. My grades suffed to the piont that I felt colliage was out of the question. I also had angier issuses that almost ruin my life. It still brings tears to my eyes ever time I revisit my past. I have two boys now, one 19 and the other 15. I have corrected a lot of the mistakes my parents did that made us the target for bullying. It's sad to say but I have try to make my kids more "normal". I helped them so that they fit in a lot better then I did. Frist I have kept them in the same schools that they have been in since kindergarden. This has been a personal sacifie as It has stiffled my career. I have raised them with good self esteme. I have found help for them if they struggled in school so they don't fall behind. I also keep a good comunication open to my kids. I am a single morther that works long hour. Sometime it seem over whelming, but I know how it can affect your life for years and I wont let it happen to my kids. I would even go to school with them every day and just sit in class just to protect them. (my kids have beg me not to go that far) But I would do anything to portect my kids from the kind of bulling I grew up with.

It seems to me that no one ever says what the parents of these "bullies" are doing about their behaviour. Do the principles or teachers at school report these bullies bad behaviour to their parents?

I would say parents should sue the school.
Kids who show no signs of remorse should be arrested on disorderly conduct.

I have developed an anti bullying youth mediation program known as "WHYMEAN", offering a unique problem solving approach, supportive efforts to all those who may need it the most within the elementary, middle and high school settings, with decreased bullying behaviors, increased peer and parent awareness and improved peer socializations evidenced within the elementary, middle and high school settings.
Having years of professional experience working with students, I know that in order to truly eliminate bullying from our schools, we have to get to the core of the problems, providing supportive efforts to all those who may need it the most.
"WHYMEAN" is a comprehensive, step by step program, action planning system, which I have used in the schools and I'd like to see, introduced to yours, because it is a program that does not just talk about results but gets true results.
It is my goal to introduce "WHYMEAN" to school district administrators state wide, so that I can explain show and why "WHYMEAN" works, how I can train administrators, clinicians, staff on site to understand and use this program, can be fit to individual school resources, offering problem solving tools to all those who may need it the most.
Currently, the "WHYMEAN" website is undergoing construction and will be up in several days and I can now be reached at

I am committed to helping students to succeed, to overcome obstacles presented, never ever to give up, it has been my life long goal.
"WHYMEAN" combines all that I have learned, all that I believe in , is able to produce results, decreased bullying, increased understanding as to how to eleiminate bullying from our schools, "WHYMEAN" will help us do that, working together we can do this, help to make a difference.
In addition, "WHYMEAN" includes a computer programming resource which similar to what I have previously done by hand, creates a system for monitoring, reporting, tracking all information, so that no child goes unnoticed, no child goes unheard.
Throughout my years of working with students, it remains my belief that often times it can take just one person to believe in you, to see below the surface, that can help to make a world of difference in the life of a child.
It is this belief that continues to motivate and inspire me each and every day.
Herein lies the essence of "WHYMEAN" anti bullying youth mediation programming.

OH MY GOD .. OMG
The bullied need someone, not a parent, not a teacher but a person to confide in a person who can provide them protection, a person in authority.....
There is no reason children should be taking their lives for such a crime of bullying.
There should be something in place by don't you think?
Bullying has been going on for far too long. I'm almost 50, a half a century old and I, although Old can remember bullying.
This has been going on far too long and we have lost many a possible prime minister or president to this terrible act of inhumanity.

If the powers that be can't seem to get a grasp on antibullying, maybe the parents and professionals should help them realize the tragic consequences.

Many thanks Anderson and your collegues such as Dr. Phil for bringing this dark secret to light.

I was bullied for yrs in school. (Now I'm 26) When I was in school they didnt want to hear about it or do anything about bulling. The need to past strict laws to stop bulling especially when kids are taking their lives. I think they should be charge with murder if the person takes their life cause if it wasnt for them bulling they person would still be alive. I thought about taking mine myself cause I thought there was no other way. But to all the people especially kids out there being bullied THERE IS OTHER WAYS TO DEAL WITH BULLIES AND IT DOESNT INVOLVE HURTING OR KILLING YOURSELF dont let the bullies win. If you hurt or kill yourself you let the bully win. All you need to do is stand up to the bully(s). They pick on the littler people cause they are weak and know if they pick on their own size they know theyll lose. It also helps not to let it all build up inside and to talk about it to your parents, friends, family, pets, or to anything just to let it out. If you want to ask me more about dealing with bullies or if you are being bullied and want someone to talk to you can e-mail me vincentfriendsonly@yahoo.com just dont let the bullies win you are better than what they are saying about you. Keep your head up.
