Gloria: 'You Will Laugh Again, You Will Love Again'

Friday, January 06, 2012 5:00AM

Last week after a show taping, Anderson received word there were people in the audience who wanted to speak with him. They were a woman by the name of Karen and her daughter Lauren. Karen’s son, Joey, had killed himself just 45 days ago.

After Anderson spoke with them for a while, Gloria then reached out, calling the women and offering her condolences.

In this moment from the show, Gloria tells Karen and Lauren, “You will laugh again. You will love again. It takes a long time and you’re never going to get over it. But don’t give up.”

I remember meeting Gloria Vanderbilt in San Francisco after her son Carter's death when she was signing her book on the tragedy.
I remember looking at her and saying, God Bless You." She appeared genuinely surprised and gratified and I will always remember that moment in time.

I am very moved by the sensitivity of both Gloria and Anderson as well as their ebullient sense of humor. I send love to both.

Dear Anderson, Today's show with your Mom was one of the heartwarming hours on tv. The both of you show the world that important people can be thoughtful caring people and we need more of you on tv. We are inundated daily with loud mouthed brash personalities who preach their own brand and think that if they speak loud enough we will believe they are important. It is refreshing to see an alternative. Thank you for being there.

Sharon -
I'm so sorry for the loss of your son Jeremy. My name is Tim and my girlfriend Lauren lost her brother two months ago. Anderson and Gloria reached out to her and while nothing at the moment is doing much to ease her pain, it did help to know someone who knows what she's experiencing is there for her. If we can return the favor in any way, please reach out to us.

Thanks for sharing. I always knew Anderson was a Vanderbilt and I really thought he was some rich kid. I never knew the tragedy he'd suffered. I did always respect him though because he reported the actual news and not some trumped up version of it. I was very choked up to see him lose it a little bit.

My dad made me live in a small bathroom for years. I ran away and lived on the streets until I came of the age to work and make a living for myself. I've believed my life to be very difficult but since watching your show I know that everyone has had things happen in their life that they have had to overcome. I learned to stop living in the past and live for today. Andersons mom is an inspiration to me. Fantastic!
Thank you!

Anderson: Loved your show yesterday with you interviewing your mother, whom I have always admired greatly. What a lovely woman. You are very lucky to have a wonderful mother like her!! It is clear that you two are very close. I wish I could meet her! All the best to you with your new show!!

Please tell that grandmother Connie that Anderson Cooper is a gay man. That's why he was not attracted to your daughter. If you have watched his previous shows, you would have known this. And why would a straight woman want to date a gay man in the first place. You can't change what's inside a person's desires. If your daughter is so beautiful, I don't think she needs help finding an attractive mate to begin with. Unless there's something wrong with her. Good Luck...

Anderson, please thank your mother for sharing her feelings about loss and how there is no 'closure' when you lose someone or suffer tragedy. 'Closure' is just another one of those illogical ways people put words to something natural thereby increasing confusion in our already very confused world.
Many thanks again,
Ebba

I regret missing this show, I wish for a re-run. I now live in Trinidad from NY but am a fervent follower of Anderson Cooper. Have you observed how the TV screen brightens with his complexion, his demeanor whether he is in Iraq or Haiti the man has something good to offer in spite of the cir***stance. I am sorry to hear of his family's tradegy but I hope his mother is consoled when she sees this bright light that could dispel all darkness.

Thank you for having your Mother on your show and talking so openly about how the survivors of a suicide cope. My wonderful daughter suicided almost 6 years ago, she was 26. The choice is each individual's you can "grow bitter or grow better" and like Ms. Vanderbilt I carry the loss of my daughter with me daily but also engage in living. Shows like today's help to erase the stigma of suicide.

Now I know why I have always loved Anderson Cooper. I didn't know that Gloria Vanderbilt was his Mother and didn't know that his brother and her son committed suicide. And oh how right she was when she said "You never get over it"! I can relate because in May of 2003 my oldest grandson, 19, committed suicide and in March of 2004 my youngest grandson, 18, also committed suicide and at least I know being brothers, they are together. How I am still here, I will never know, except my oldest grandson, left an Angel from Heaven behind. He was 6 months old when his Daddy died and he will be 9 in November. He has been a precious gift.
My heart goes out to anyone that has lost a child but to suicide it seems to always be with you every day.
Thank you, Anderson Cooper and your Mom for your show yesterday.

Thank you both for talking about Carter and the suicide. My brother committed suicide. My Mother found him(shot him self in head with rifle and shotgun. He put an arrow between the triggers and kicked it with his feet. My mom was never the same after that. No one knows why he committed suicide. He was in the navy(career), married, wife was expecting a child. I think about it often and only wish I knew he was so depressed. No one knows why and it is not fair for those he left behind and what it did to our family. Thank you and your Mother for sharing Carter's story.
