‘My Son Doesn’t Look Like a Drug Addict’

Monday, September 12, 2011 8:09AM
A mom in our audience, Kelly, knows what the Winehouses are going through.

Twenty months ago, Kelly received the phone call every parent dreads... telling her that her 20-year-old son had died of a drug overdose.

In this premiere show clip, Kelly says, “He (Kenneth) doesn’t look like what people think a a drug addict looks like.” In this moment from the show, the Winehouses and Amy share a connection; understating that when someone you love is struggling with addition, there are ups and downs. Amy’s dad, Mitch, said, “You grasp onto the smallest sliver of hope.”

Community at “Anderson" is important. Please leave your condolences to Kelly below.

Kel <3. If they only knew how many of us are out here....glad one of us could be there. And sadly our little community grows daily. Thank you for having the love and courage to share.

Firstly, my condolences to you and your family. We have an addict in our family also and my mom is in the same place as you were, dreading to get that fateful phone call. So we feel your pain. God be with you during your continued healing. Thank you for sharing your story. I'll share it with my mom.

I`m so sorry for your loss. Too many young people are dying before they even begin life.

I feel your loss. We lost our son in May of an overdose. He was 32. Nothing can prepare you for the pain and the emptyness of this kind of death. I found him in his bedroom after an hour before talking to him. Looking at him you would have never known he did drugs. It is a black evil that takes over a person and never lets go.

The video clips are a great idea. I can watch what I'm interested in and stop the clips any time. Please post the whole talk with Gloria airing next Monday. Will check the site often, but so far the interview with Anderson's mom is the first one that looks interesting. Thanks for the videos, for fans who can't catch the show when it airs!

Kel, I am glad that you shared the story of your son's death. He wasn't a celebrity, but your son--a regular young fellow. Hopefully, parents will be more aware and can intervene for help when their kids first start using drugs. Best wishes to you.

I really appreciate you sharing your story (even though it was brief). I am sorry for your loss. This reality of drug addiction impacts every day lives more than most people realize.
